Aaron Barschak got turned away on Good Friday at the church of the
Holy Sepulchre, Jesuralem, in his new incarnation The Comedius
Terrorchristus.
Mr Barschak was dragging a 10 foot by 6 foot cross and with placards
nailed either side that read respectively COMEDIUS TERRORCHRISTUS
READY TO DIE FOR ALLAHFF and on the other side MAKING A FOOL
OF MYSELF IN PUBLIC IS MY PASSION. He was dressed in white boxer
briefs and what he calls 'Brit Art' glasses amd a crown of thorns
cut out of a red bowler hat to which he ascribes as an influence
the Belgian artist Rene Magritte.
Asked why he had chosen to recreate the walk of Christ on Good Friday,
Mr Barschak said it was part of his artistic video and photographic
exhibition that he hoped would be nominated for the Turner Prize and
said he would consider offers from Charles Saatchi upward of ten million
pounds sterling.
When charged with the fact that this was nothing but a cheap publicity
stunt for a flgging career he retorted 'One thing this was not
was cheap, it just seemed like a fun thing to do.'
In response to charges that, a stunt like this could be very dangerous
he said '...you can get killed crossing the road or the Via
Dolorosa, besides if you don't think God has a sense of humour then
you don't really know him.'
The video installation is to be called Christ in For Mel G
Had, and will also feature as part of Mr Barschak's Edinburgh
Show this year.
